Create Parent Asset

A parent asset type is assigned one or more child asset types. When a hierarchy is created, the list of allowable child assets to be added is restricted to selected asset types. Typically, these are defined during configuration and setup.

To create an asset hierarchy, you must first create the parent asset. In this example, the parent asset is a linear asset. To create a Parent Asset:

  1. Click the Start Spatials Edits button and select the layer you want to work with.
  2. Click the Create Asset button . A Create asset dialog opens to the Attributes tab.
  3. Enter or select the asset’s attributes as needed. Some fields such as Start date may be mandatory. Some fields are greyed-out and cannot be changed. Other fields may include value lists that are determined by the organization.
  4. Scroll to the Location Details section at the bottom of the Attributes tab.

You can set the location of the asset in two ways: by specifying the network location or by locating the asset directly on the map.
    1. If you know the name of the network location where the asset should be located, you can enter it in the Name field. As you type, a list of locations matching the characters entered appears. You can select from the list. Offset, Datum at Start and Start Datum Offset values are automatically populated.
    2. To position the asset on the map, click Locate from Map. A message appears prompting you to select the element to create the asset.

Minimize the Create Asset dialog to expose the map. Click a location on the map where the asset is to be located. If there are multiple network elements at the selected location, a dialog opens listing the elements. If you have set up a “Preferred LRM” this element will be displayed on bold and listed at the top.

Click the radio button beside the datum or route to use and then click Select. On the map, the network element is highlighted in yellow.

Click a spot on the element where the asset is to be located.

Maximize the Create Asset dialog. The name of the element, Offset, Datum at Start, and Start Datum Offset now appear in the Location Details section.

  5. Click Save. The parent asset is created. It appears at the top of the hierarchy tree positioned at the left side of the dialog.
